Save the Koalas By Helping to Rebuild Their Home

Every few months I choose one print to feature. 50% of the profits made from sold prints will be donated to one charity, foundation or cause in the photo’s city or country — some small way to give to place that’s left a mark on me.

And for the first featured print, I’m looking to Australia.

Starting from July 2019, extreme heat, lightening and incidents of arson started fires that spread throughout Australia. It continued to spread out of control and wasn’t declared contained until mid-February 2020.

Why it matters to me

According to recent news (as of March 2, 2020), the bushfires have killed at least 33 people, destroyed over 3,000 homes, numerous wildlife sanctuaries, devastating koala and kangaroo numbers while endangering other wildlife native to Australia.

In 2017 I spent 4 months living in Australia and I had the opportunity to encounter koalas, kangaroos and Australian wildlife up-close. At Kennett River, you can walk right up to them (with caution) if you’re able to find them. I pulled out a better lens and started searching the tops of trees and found one sleeping, undisturbed and ignoring the noise below.

I’m a big believer in leaving zero footprints behind in any place I visit and this sleepy koala is one of my favorite shots from my time in Australia — everyone just wants a nice quiet spot to call home.

About Two Thumbs Wildlife Trust

Two Thumbs Wildlife Trust was established and run by James Fitzgerald, consisting of three koala sanctuaries located in Canberra. The sanctuaries are a base for scientific research and wildlife rehabilitation including more than just koalas.

The sanctuaries were hit hard by the bushfires. Then on January 22, 2020, a large air tanker protecting the sanctuary crashed, killing all 3 American firefighters on board the Canadian-owned C-130 plane. The fire also destroyed the remaining sheds, houses, and machinery, killing rescued koalas and also destroying James’ home.

The outpouring of volunteers and donations shows what a community can do when gathered together — locally and globally. After reading and researching different organizations and charities, I wanted to donate to a sanctuary directly.

When  I came across Two Thumbs Wildlife Trust and reading James’ story and the efforts of the 3 Americans lost, I wanted to aid in some way to help him rebuild and continue his work and research.

And as of March 2020, bushfires have all been extinguished with the heaviest rainfall recorded in 30 years.
